Metal bending is a process wherein steel is pressed by a machine to form the desired angle such as a ‘U’ or ‘V’ shape. The metal is placed in a machine then enough force is applied to the punch to push the metal into the die mould. Although most metal bending machines works similarly, there are different kinds of it depending on the level of pressure applied.

Types of Press Brakes

Metal bending machines are powered by different kinds of press brakes. Here are the most commonly used ones.

  • Mechanical press brake – This type is well suited for ‘U’ shapes because of its design. If you’re looking for a more accurate and faster steel bending method, a mechanical press brake is what you need most.
  • Hydraulic press brake – This type of press brake is commonly used to bend sheet metal because of its preciseness and accuracy. Most of these machines are incorporated with the latest technology making them a popular choice among other types.

  • Computer Numerically Controlled – Among all press brakes, this type is the most accurate and precise of them all. It can bend metal sections that are even a few millimetres apart, unlike other types that need wider gaps between sections.

Kinds of Steel Bending

Aside from having different kinds of press brakes, there are also different types of metal bending process depending on the desired finished product.

Air bending is one of the most commonly used metal bending procedures because it doesn’t require much weight for it to work. In air bending, the metal sheet is laid on the machine then the punch pushes it to the V-shaped die. The metal is not pushed thoroughly in so it doesn’t really touch the bottom of the die.

Bottom bending, on the other hand, differs from air bending because the metal sheet is bottomed at the die first before the punch is pushed in to get the same angle as the die. This process requires lesser tonnage compared to coining.

Coining is a different process from the previous two. In this process, the punch is pressed over the sheet until it flows into the die. However, because of the way it is done, it requires more weight compared to the previous two. However, if done by skilled hands, it is not that complicated at all.
